A fire that broke out in Hawasa City, capital of Ethiopia’s Southern region, on February 21, 2015, has killed over 20 people, victims told ESAT. The government on the other hand said only one person died.
One of the victims and eyewitnesses of the fire said to ESAT from the City that he personally saw the deceased bodies of at least three people and his friends have reportedly buried 27 bodies so far.
The eyewitness said he saw a deceased mother with her three children and also saw two more people dead the next day. Government securities are searching and burying the dead. The residents complain that they are not getting enough support from the government.
The government has not disclosed the cause of the fire. Residents say the City Administration started the fire in order to sell the area.
ESAT’s effort to speak to the Mayor of the City has been unsuccessful.
