February 25, 2015

Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, who is touring different towns of the Amhara region as he returns from the 40th anniversary celebration of the TPLF, has cancelled his planned discussion with the people of Wolakyit, North Gonder, Ethiopia fearing the peoples’ protest. The people are reportedly disgruntled by the PM’s decision.

The residents of the town told ESAT that over 8000 angry people were waiting to meet the PM however; organisers of the event led him to skip Wolkayit and head directly to Dejena.

Learning the PM’s decision, some angry youth burnt TPLF’s flag while others deserted to join the armed struggle.

The residents said that they were forced to join the Tigray region without their will while they were actually Amhara, have endured untold abuses because they raised identity questions, have been given no response to the questions they raised and warned that they will give their own response lest the government responds.

The PM reportedly entered Kombolcha town, Central Ethiopia along with one of his advisors, Arkebe Okubay and Amhara region’s President Degu Andargachew. Students and residents were reportedly forced to take to the streets to receive Hailemariam.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn laid a ceremonial foundation stone for the Mek’ele – Weldiya/Hara Gebeya railway project and reopened Kombolcha Airport. Most residents said that they took the inaugurations as propaganda fanfares in the midst of a population that is struggling to survive.
