Semayawi Party (the Blue Party) said in a statement today that several of its members have been arrested by Ethiopia’s security forces as part of the government’s crackdown on people who took part in the ongoing anti-government protest in the Oromia region.
The Party, which called on the formation of a popular government in Ethiopia, said the regime, after killing 86 protesters, is trying to shift the blame on members of opposition political parties and independent journalists who were simply covering the protest.
The Party said regime’s security forces have arrested editor-in-chief of Negere Ethiopia, the Party’s organ, Getachew Shiferaw, and members of the Party Yonatan Tesfaye, Tewodros Asfaw, Daniel Tesfaye, Ermias Tsegaye, Firew Tekle among others. The Blue Party also mentioned leaders of the Oromo Federalist Congress, Bekele Gerba and Bekele Tafa, who were also detained by the regime last week.
The Party said in the statement that it is the responsibility of all Ethiopians to stop the bloodshed perpetrated by the regime and form a popular government that respects human rights and defend the sovereignty of the country.
