Ethiopian National Bank’s Senior Macroeconomic Advisor Melesse Menale stated that foreign companies which were aware of Ethiopia’s decision to launch a securities exchange under the Capital Market Proclamation were expressing interest to establish their presence in the market.
Melesse Menale disclosed that three well known global companies were desirous to participate in Ethiopian Securities Exchange and added that technical discussions were underway. He stated that Financial Deepening Africa (FSD Africa) signed an agreement to become a shareholder in the securities exchange. The advisor also pointed out that in addition to FSD Africa, International Finance Corporation (IFC) had shown interest to participate in the Ethiopian Securities Exchange.
Investment banks, securities dealer, and others were waiting until Ethiopian Capital Market Authority started issuing license, it was reported. Ethiopia enacted the Capital Market Proclamation last year.

Ethiopia’s state-appointed human rights body has called for the release of 16 journalists and media personnel after new arrests in recent days in the capital Addis Ababa and the restive region of Amhara. Press watchdogs and rights groups have said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government is increasingly intimidating the media and harassing opponents as it seeks to quell unrest in regions. Ethiopian authorities have been particularly cracking down in Amhara and Oromiya regions recently despite announcing a ceasefire to a sixteen-month civil war in March. The authorities have justified arrests of media personnel by accusing them of siding with rebels. Rights commission
